Who is she?
It all begins with an idea.
Rachel Ruysch was a hugely successful artist during the Dutch Golden Age and lived 1664 -1750. Her ouvure is extensive and is primarily comprised of still life florals. Despite her long career, technical accomplishments, conceptual wit within her symbology, wealth and fame, she was relegated to the footnotes of art history for several hundred years.
The erasure of the significance of Ruysch's contributions to art history is not unique or rare. Her name is one of many censored and silenced women discussed by @katy.hessel in #thehistoryofartwithoutmen.
This particular bloom is inspired by Still Life Of Roses, Tulips, A Sunflower And Other Flowers In A Glass Vase With A Bee, Butterfly And Other Insects Upon A Marble Ledge which sold in London in 2013 for GBP 1,650,500.00 My painting is a portrait of Ruysch and a tribute to her enduring legacy and indomitable success.

Nancy’s Gift No. 1.
Nancy’s Gift No. 2.
When Nancy held these blooms and then gave them to me, I felt so understood. So seen. I felt encouraged to chase my ambitions harder. To flesh out my ideas and birth them. Nancy didn’t just hold blooms. She held my aspirations. My becoming. These are the things women hold for each other.
